Watkinsville resident Richard Hudson received the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award from Slippery Rock University during an Oct. 22 awards banquet at the college in Slippery Rock, Pa.
The award is one of the university's oldest and most prestigious awards, given to an alumnus in recognition to his or her professional and community endeavors.
Hudson was inducted into the Slippery Rock University Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for his accomplishments on the baseball diamond from 1965 to '68.
Hudson has been active in the Athens and Oconee communities. He once coordinated the University of Georgia's Olympic efforts in 1996 and for 13 years was director of corporate education for the Terry College of Business. He has served as president of the Athens Symphony, on the Oconee County Board of Education and once was president of the Athens Rotary Club.
Young GOPs meet Hank
Republican Hank Huckaby, a former vice president for the University of Georgia who recently won the state House of Representatives District 113 seat, spoke recently to the Young Republicans of Oconee County High School.
Among those students who met with Huckaby were Matthew Kinnard, Cole Northcutt, Bennett Guthrie, Hannah Walters, Mary Beth Phillips, Justin Hill and Jake Chapman. Kevin Guthas is the club sponsor.
Holiday puppet show set for Oconee library
The Oconee County Library is hosting the Atlanta Puppet’s Holiday Puppet Show at 7 p.m. Dec. 2.
The Christmas season presentation, made possible by Friends of the Oconee County Library, is an interactive variety performance.
Peter and Mary Ann Hart make up the team of Atlanta Puppet. Their puppet programs have been approved by the Georgia Arts Council, the Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs, The South Carolina Arts Commission and Young Audiences of Atlanta Inc. The Harts also have constructed and performed puppets for the Cartoon Network, Burger King, the Tourism Bureau of Quebec, Turner Broadcasting, the United Way and Coca-Cola.
The program is free.
In addition, from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8, students ages 11-18 are invited to a creative wrapping paper workshop. They will have the opportunity to make wrapping paper, as all materials will be supplied. Snacks are included.

Mystery novel group meets each month
The mystery novel discussion group at the Oconee County Library will meet Dec. 1.
The group discusses are variety of mystery books by contemporary authors such as James Patterson to classic authors such as Edgar Allen Poe.
The library hosts the group on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. To track down the mystery writer for discussion in December, call (706) 769-3950. No registration is necessary.
Farmington gallery holds holiday market
The first Depot Days Holiday Market will be held at the Farmington Depot Gallery on Dec.4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
The gallery artists are offering an array of art and handmade holiday gifts.

Oconee Primary kids to sing at Love Light
St. Mary’s Auxiliary is hosting its 11th annual Love Light ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the hospital atrium at 1230 Baxter St., Athens. The lighting of the Love Light tree culminates a yearlong campaign that benefits St. Mary’s Hospice House Fund.
The program includes lighting the 25-foot-tall Love Light tree, musical selections by the Little Chiefs Chorale from Oconee Primary School and light refreshments. Free parking will be available.
Love Light donations can be given all year long and are a meaningful way to commemorate a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, or can be given in memory or honor of a friend or family member.
